Mental health (Depression) through the periscope of Vedic Astrology

To identify the mental state of a being, we need to have a holistic approach to reading one’s chart.

Depression is a state of mind where feelings of severe despondency and dejection becomes very prominent. Medically, the term can be very vast to define but it is termed as disorder(not in order) of happy hormones(serotonin, endorphins and dopamine).

Depression is one of the major issues of the modern world. It’s estimated that around one billion people globally have a mental or substance use disorder.(source:- Ourworldindata)

In such an unfortunate scenario, Vedic Astrology can be very useful to detect the problem and counsel the solutions. The mention of such illnesses and their solutions are amply found in Vedic Astrology literature. Today we will see how can one detect someone’s mental health through birth chart and how can he/she be given correct remedial measures.

To identify the mental state of a being, we need to have a holistic approach to reading one’s chart. However, there are some key checkpoints through which one can easily get access to the mental state of the respective person. Those checkpoints are:- The moon, the 4th house, and the 8th house.

In a nutshell, if the moon is the mind then the 4th house is the overall mindset of that native during his/her lifetime.

Why Moon?

Parashara Rishi describes Moon in Brihat Parashara Hora Shaastra as the mind that drives the soul. Moon also represents the home environment, mother. So when the moon is afflicted in one’s chart, he/she is prone to many mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, maniac disorder, etc.

Why 4th house?

According to Kaalpurusha Kundali, 4th house is the natural house of Moon. In a natal chart, 4th house represents the home environment which builds up the average mindset of the native during his lifetime. In a nutshell, if the moon is the mind then the 4th house is the overall mindset of that native during his/her lifetime. 4th house is also the house of satisfaction and pleasures. So any malefic in the 4th house gives the probability of sowing negative thoughts which will eventually lead to complex mental illnesses.

Why the 8th house?

There is a technique called Bhavat Bhavatam in Vedic astrology. To understand, this technique here is a simple example to grasp:-

  • 1st house is self.
  • 3rd house is siblings
  • 4th house is a mother.

Now, here the 1st house is the self and 3rd from 1st house is 3 places away from it. Now 3 places away from any house will be the siblings related to that house. Here the 4th house is the mother so 3 places away from 4th will be the 6th house. So siblings of the mother are always seen through the sixth house. To be more precise, the 6th house is the house of the maternal uncle.

Similarly, 5th from Lagna(1st house) is an expression, children, future, outcomes, etc. So 5th places away from any house are the expression of that respective house. By that dictum, the 8th house becomes the expression of the 4th house. So whatever state of mind one carries that gets stored in 8th house for future expressions. That is why the 8th house is also the house of secrets and suppression. The more secrets one keeps, the more emotional suppression one carries, the more chances are there of some mental illnesses to occur.

So while studying the mind of the person, one needs to see mainly 2 houses and one planet however, there are 100 more ways of decoding such stuff. Some of the combinations that can show some mental stability in one’s chart may be as follows:-

1. Moon with Rahu/Ketu/Saturn

2. Debilitated 4th lord

3. Saturn/Ketu in 4th house

4. Moon in 8th house

5. 8th lord debilitated(not in a comfortable zone) etc.

Vedic Astrology is not only about finding the problems but also finding the precise solutions to the problems. The remedial measures may depend upon the individual chart however there are some generalized solutions that can be followed by anyone to stay in tranquil mental health.

Remedial measures:-

1. Chanting Om Namah Shivaya daily(108 times)

2. Worshipping Lord Shiva because he is the one who keeps the moon(mind) in control.

3. Doing yoga and exercise

4. Performing pranayama(prana+ ayama= balancing the very vital force that sustains life)

5. Reciting Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram

By following these simple generalized measures, one can stay miles away from complex to complex mental illnesses. So Vedic astrology is always about embracing life and knowing, a counseling rather than just predicting.
