Decoding Saturn and its Sadesati
Whenever someone hears the word “SaadeSati”/sadhesaati, fear, anxiety is the most seen emotion then after. Is SadeSati worth fearing? Is Sadesati that bad that people get so anxious and depressed during this period? Today, we will break down the facts, myths, and the overall aspects covered by the one and only Shani Sadesati. We will decode Saturn with remedies of Sadesati.
Saturn, The Taskmaster.
Before dwelling into Sadhesaati, we need to first understand the graha Saturn. Saturn is the English term for the Sanskrit word “Shani”. In Sanskrit, Shani means slow, gradually with time. So the quality of Shani is slow and in fact it is the slowest moving graha in Vedic Astrology. Saturn is the karmic planet in Vedic Astrology which keeps the record of every human action in every life. So, Saturn is like a record keeper of every small and big action that we ‘humans’ perform. It is also the planet of justice, discipline, maturity, and practical wisdom.

Significance of Sadesati or Sadhesati
Now after knowing what Saturn is, let us move towards decoding Sadhesati. Saturn stays in one zodiac sign for approximately about 2 and a half years. For Saturn to make a complete cycle overall 12 zodiacs, it takes approximately 30 years. This is the longest time taken by a graha among the Navagrahas. That is also why it is called a slow-moving planet. So a Saade Sati is a seven and half year time phase where Saturn is sitting in your moon sign, it’s a previous sign and it’s an upcoming sign.
To make it further simpler, total of 3 rashis will always be going under Sadhesati at the same time differencing only on the phases of it. For example, currently, Saturn is in the sign of Capricorn. The previous sign before Capricorn is Sagittarius (Saturn in Sagittarius; dhanu Rashi)and the upcoming sign after Capricorn is Aquarius. So, now whoever has the moon sign of Sagittarius, Capricorn, and Aquarius, all three of them are going under the Sadhesati phase right now. Astrologically speaking, Sadhe Sati starts when Saturn (Shani) enters the 12th sign from the birth Moon sign and ends when Saturn leaves 2nd sign from the birth Moon sign.
Remedies of Sadesati and 7 and Half years
Sadhesati’s 7 and half years can be further divided into 2.5 years each for the identification of its intensity. The first 2.5 yrs is said to be initial, the middle 2.5 is Madhya, and the latter one is antya saadhesaati. The question of fear may have aroused due to the long period too. As we discussed above, Saturn is that waiter in the restaurant who only brings what you ordered. The food you ordered is your actions and the food that you got from that waiter or wait staff is your karma fal ( fal where fal means fruit/results) which Shani delivers. Since we live our lives in lack of consciousness, we get in the illusion that what have we done to suffer such. Saturn never delivers something that we don’t deserve.
Despite having such a peculiar good quality, Saturn is kept under malefic planets in Vedic astrology. This is due to its sheer indiscriminatory vision and aspects that make people lose their tranquility. However, in reality, Saturn only rewards us what we deserve.
However, some of the malefic effects seen during Saturn Saadhesati are:
- Mental Agitation
- Excessive Procrastination
- Anxiety
- Health
- Depression

Instead of spreading fear and anxiety, we should live those phases of Saturn with a sense of gratitude and forgiveness. Sadhesati is the perfect time for self-realization and contemplation because Saturn teaches a lot during that phase. If it is raining outside, we cannot stop the rain. However, we can carry an umbrella to save us from getting wet. Similarly, we cannot deny what we deserve but we can reduce the ill effects of our karma fal. Below are some of the remedial measures one can follow if he/she is going through a tough period during these 7.5 years.
Remedies of Sadesati
Chanting Hanuman Chalisa
There is a lovely story of Treta Yuga regarding why hanuman is preferrable diety for casting out Saturn’s malefic effects. King Ravana had captivated all the nine Grahas including, Shani, to dodge the ill effects of them. When Hanuman burnt the golden city, Lanka, through his tail, he found all those 9 graha’s diety inside a prison. He freed all of them and got them released. Due to Hanuman’s such helpful act, Shani promised that his malefic effects on any native will get nullified if he/she does bhakti(devotion) of the Lord HANUMAN. So, chanting Hanuman Chalisa is the best remedy for anyone going under the Sadhesati Dasha period.
Helping poor/differently able people
In Vedic Astrology, Saturn represents servants, poor, differently-abled people. So helping such people in real life will surely cast away the many ill effects cast by Shani.
Meditation/pranayama
Saturn is the planet of discipline. Keeping the breath, life energy disciplined and consciously, helps in improving the health of a native which will automatically lessen the ill effects from Saturn.
Eating Sattvic foods
According to AYURVEDA, the whole existence is of 3 gunas. They are Sattwa, Rajas, and Tamas. Saturn is of more Tamas guna which creates inertia. So avoiding Tamsic foods such as meats, alcoholic beverages, etc, and consuming more sattvic foods like green vegetables, milk, etc will reduce a lot of ill effects of Saturn.
